LEARN ITALIAN

WHY LEARN ITALIAN?

Italian is one of the most popular romance languages to learn.  It is derived from Latin, and it is spoken by over 85 million people worldwide. Italian is the official language of Italy, and parts of Switzerland; it is also popular in the United States, Canada, and Argentina.

When you learn Italian, it opens you up to all the Italian history, food, literature, poetry, and art. To learn this beautiful language and make real progress, you need an Italian learning course with a real native speaker, and here is why! When you learn with apps and watch a few videos, you are not only missing out on practicing the language and its nuances, but you are also running in circles with your learning method.

At The Languages Corner, you will experience meaningful interactions with a native teacher, which will provide you with:

  • An authentic language and culture experience, by exposing you to the nuances of the language, accents, dialects, and Italian traditions.
  • Personalized learning, based on your needs, interests, and goals. This is a more effective way to learn the language rather than relying on a generic language program.
  • Immediate feedback on your pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary usage, which will help you improve your skills more quickly.
  • Conversation practice thanks to a supportive and immersive environment.
  • Cultural insights, which will help you understand the language in its cultural context and enhance your overall learning experience.

Our Methodology

In addition to teaching you all the aspects of the language, grammar, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, we focus on:

  • A communicative approach, which has interaction as the primary goal. This means that we will encourage you to speak as much as possible through role plays, discussions, and simulations.
  • Task-based approach, where you will learn within a specific context, such as ordering food at a restaurant or making a reservation.

What we offer
  • A cost-free consultation (no obligation!) with the teacher, during which you will receive a level evaluation, as well as learn the topics/steps to follow to reach your goals.
  • Learn from the comfort of your home or on the go
  • 1:1 lessons, where the teacher’s attention is 100% on you.
  • Private group lessons, where you can learn with another family member or a friend, provided that you have the same level
  • Public group courses, which you can join a few times a year and get to know other international students
  • All material is included

Testimonials

Meet our Italian Teachers:

Ciao! My name is Suzana and I was born in Zagabria (Croatia), where I studied Italian language and I specialized in the teaching of Italian as a foreign language (L2), especially for English and Slavic speakers. Following my BA (Laurea), I attended two Italian teaching courses, one at the University of Perugia and the other at Fondazione Cini in Venice. Even though my mother tongue is Croatian, I possess mother tongue fluency in Italian, which I taught at three high schools in Croatia, as well as at the University of Zagabria. Following this experience, I moved to Bari (Puglia) where I continued to teach both at the university level and privately. Since 2007, I work as a professor at the University L’ Orientale in Naples, Italy. I am very passionate about languages and I enjoy teaching them to individuals and small groups, with whom I use a personalized and alternative method of instruction.

Ciao! My name is Ivana and I am a teacher of Italian as a Second Language. After my BA in Foreign Languages (I speak English, French and Spanish), I earned the DITALS certificate, which provided me with a specialization in teaching Italian to foreigners. I’m currently teaching in the Italian public school and collaborating with different Italian language teaching organizations in Italy. Since 2016, I also began working as an educator to train Italian teachers, both in the public and private sector. In my lessons I use the communicative approach, which is based on real-life situations. When I teach, my topics are always different and interesting. It’s really difficult for one of my students to get bored! In addition to my job (that I love!), I am passionate about traveling, cooking, reading novels, and belly dancing.

Northern Italy, in the Reggio Emilia region. I am currently teaching Italian for various private schools and institutions, both online and in person. I started teaching Italian LS/L2 in 2014 as a volunteer and since then I never stopped. In order to be able to teach Italian professionally, I earned the following certifications: DITALS II at the University of Siena (Italy). DI.L.IT INTERNATIONAL HOUSE (Rome, Italy) and CELI Oral Examiner (University of Perugia, Italy). When I teach, I use the communicative approach and authentic materials, which make the learning process engaging, realistic, and motivating for students. Besides Italian, I speak English, German, French and Spanish. When I am not teaching, I love reading, hanging out with friends, watching films and TV series, walking in nature and, above all, I adore travelling, getting to know other cultures, food and learning languages!!

Born and raised in Sicily, I studies Modern Literature at the University of Catania, although I then followed my great passion for ceramics and art and made it my profession. I worked for 15 years in a large laboratory and opened my own studio. From 2014 to 2017 I moved to Silicon Valley, where I started to give Italian language classes to adults and children, both in person and online. In 2018, my family and I moved to Boston where I taught Italian to adult groups and began teaching at Scuola PIB in Cambridge (MA) as well. I love teaching my beautiful language and Italian culture! In my free time, I listen to music and Italian radio, read, spend time in the kitchen experimenting and creating good Italian and non-Italian food, work in the garden and travel.

Faqs

WE ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.

How difficult is it to learn Italian?

It’s ok if you are a Spanish, French or one of the Romance language speakers. It is somewhat more difficult for an English speaker trying to learn it for the first time. If you, instead, already have experience learning a language, it is not too bad. No matter your background, it is NOT an impossible task! Give it a try by purchasing one lesson.

Are the teachers native Italian speakers?

Yes. All our teachers, in addition to being 100% native speakers, have the qualifications and/or the experience to teach languages to adults and some also to children. This means that the teacher has worked or is currently working in schools, universities or other private settings. The Languages Corner finds talented teachers and hires them to teach online.

How long does it take to learn Italian?

Below you’ll find an approximate breakdown of the hours needed to learn Italian seriously (or any other language). You don’t have to focus on the quantity, but rather on the level you want to achieve (for this, please refer to our CEFR document). For conversational Italian, you can stop at the A2 level.

A1 Breakthrough or beginner

From absolute beginners to A1

Approx. 45-80 hours

A2 Waystage or elementary

From A1 to A2

Approx. 80-120 hours

B1 Threshold or intermediate

From A2 to B1

Approx. 160-200 hours

B2 Vantage or upper intermediate

From B1 to B2

Approx. 240-280 hours

C1 Effective Operational Proficiency or advanced

Approx. 400 – 500 hours

C2 Mastery or Proficiency

How quickly can I learn Italian?

This depends on a combination of factors, i.e. your internal motivation to do some work at home, in addition to our course, and practicing on your own during your spare time. Here’s the ideal scenario for you to speed things up:

  • Take a course or private lessons at least 2 x per week (ideally, 4 times per week).
  • Do 2 + hours of weekly homework
  • Practice every day (i.e. speaking, listening, etc.) for a minimum of 15-20 minutes per day or 2 + hours per week

Do you offer intermediate or advanced Italian courses?

Yes, we do. Public courses with other international Italian learners are offered two-three times per year (September, January and June), whereas you can take private Italian lessons or private group lessons anytime you prefer. Please contact us for more information: valeria@thelanguagescorner.com

How are your courses and private lessons structured?

You can choose one of the following options:

  • One-on-one lessons, where it is just you and the teacher. Private lessons usually last one hour, although more time can be added upon request. During this time, the teacher will go over the material she sent you via e-mail prior to the lesson, your homework (if she assigned any) and teaches you based on a syllabus that is customized according to your language needs. The lesson will be taught by covering all or some of the four abilities of language learning (reading, writing, speaking and listening), depending on your goals (the latter are discussed in a complimentary preliminary chat before lessons take place). The frequency of these lessons is chosen by you, in agreement with the teacher. You can opt for lessons once, twice or multiple times per week. The cost varies according to the frequency of your lessons.
  • Private group lessons, where you learn with a friend, a family member or a coworker, provided that the language level is the same (an evaluation of your levels will be conducted during your complimentary consultation). As for private lessons, during the group lesson the teacher will go over the material she sent you via e-mail, your homework and the customized program. Once again, the frequency of these lessons is decided by you, as well as the duration (1 hour, 1 hour and 30 minutes or 1 hour and 45 minutes). The cost of these lessons varies according to the lesson length.

Public group courses, where you learn with other international students. These courses are capped at 6 to maximize your learning experience and the group (minimum 2 participants) is put together by us. There are specific months of the year when we run our group courses (mostly September and January and some shorter courses in the Summer) and are based on a set number of lessons (between 10-15 lessons). Each lesson lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes.

What are the costs of your lessons?

The private lesson costs depend on your weekly frequency. For example, if you decide to learn Italian once a week, the cost per hour per lesson is $31; for lessons twice a week, you’ll pay $29 per lesson per hour; whereas for lessons three times a week, you’ll pay $27per lesson per hour.

For private group lessons, the lesson prices range from $18 per person per hour to $22 per person for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

For public group courses, the average cost is about $220 for 10 lessons and $330 for 15 lessons. Each lesson lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes.

How is the payment calculated?

When you decide to start your lessons, we count how many lesson days there are in a given month. For example, if you decide to attend lessons once a week on Wednesdays and there are 4 Wednesdays in a month, the calculation is $31 per lesson x 4 lessons, which is equal to $124. Basically, we calculate the cost based on the number of lesson days. If you purchase more than one consecutive month, a discount on the total applies.

There are also cases when a student wants to purchase an entire level of Italian. In this circumstance, we calculate the total cost and provide a discounted price. There is also the possibility to break down the payment in reasonable smaller payments.

What type of payment options are there?

We mostly take USD or Euros (payments in other currencies are also possible) and you can pay through the website with credit card, PayPal or Transferwise. For US military personnel, we also offer wire transfers through Navy Federal.
